Once again, California State University Stanislaus has received the highest honor a college or university can receive for its continual dedication to community service, civic engagement, and volunteering.
For the seventh consecutive year, Stanislaus has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, proving a strong commitment to community service efforts.
In 2012 alone, students and faculty from CSU Stanislaus provided roughly 54,000 volunteer hours to the local community, equating to an estimated economic impact of more than $1.14 million.
“CSU Stanislaus has a long history of service learning and believes strongly in preparing our graduates to be active leaders and participants in an ever-changing world,” said Julie Fox, the director of service learning at CSU Stsnislaus. “We’re honored to receive this prestigious award, and we owe much of it to the faculty members involved and especially the students. They’re the energy driving our commitment, and they’re the ones who make it all happen.”
In January, the Turlock Chamber of Commerce named Fox Higher Education Person of the Year as part of the Best of Turlock awards. Fox was chosen for her work and contribution to service learning.
Fox works with other faculty and students within the university’s Office of Service Learning on the following programs:
– Criminal Justice Mentor Program: CSU Stanislaus students help more than 300 Turlock students per year (K-12) who are struggling with grades, delinquency, truancy and other issues.
– Science Saturdays & Annual Science Day: Free, fun and educational opportunities on campus for the general public
– Chemistry in the Classroom: CSU Stanislaus faculty and students design science experiments for area classes.
– Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program: Business Administration students and service learning staff provide no-cost income tax service and financial literacy education for low-income residents.
The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll has been awarded since 2006, and continues to be administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the American Council on Education and Campus Compact also manage the program.
