Repeat Drunk Driver Arrested After Crashing Into Pole

At about 11:49pm Thursday, Turlock Police Officer Ayala came upon a traffic collision in the 100 block of W. Main Street.

A vehicle had struck a street light pole.

Ayala made contact with and identified the vehicle’s driver as Jeremy Gates, 39, of Patterson.

Gates stated he wasn’t injured.

When Ayala had his dispatcher run Gates, he was discovered to have a suspended driver’s license due to a prior DUI conviction involving alcohol and drugs.

While speaking with Gates, Ayala noticed he was displaying objective symptoms of being under the influence, so he asked him if he’d be willing to participate in standardized field sobriety tests. Gates agreed and completed the tests.

Ayala then asked Gates if he’d be willing to blow into a preliminary alcohol screening device, which he did.

Based on the totality of the circumstances, Ayala determined Gates was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him.

Gates was issued another driver’s license suspension order and his vehicle was towed.

Gates was then booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood alcohol content of .08% or greater.
