Man on PRCS Arrested Driving Stolen Vehicle for Second Time

At about 11:18pm Saturday, Turlock Police responded to an area check at Lander Avenue and E. Glenwood Avenue.

A stolen vehicle had just been detected by license plate readers driving northbound from the intersection.

Officer Marquez arrived in the area and located the vehicle on Baywood Lane.

Prior to Marquez signaling for the vehicle to stop, it randomly stopped in the 300 block of Rosewood Drive and a high-risk stop was conducted.

The vehicle’s driver, later identified as Jose Cortez, 36, of Ceres, was detained at gunpoint without incident.

When Marquez had his dispatcher run Cortez, he discovered he had a no-bail felony bench warrant out of Ceres for domestic violence inflicting corporal injury, was on post-release community supervision for the same charge, and had a suspended driver’s license due to a DUI conviction.

This also wasn’t Cortez’s first arrest while driving a stolen vehicle in Turlock. Back in December, he was arrested by Officer Khounlivong under very similar circumstances in the 100 block of Almond Avenue.

Cortez was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of receiving a stolen vehicle, driving with a suspended license due to a DUI conviction, and his warrant.

Officers were unable to get ahold of the vehicle’s owner by phone, so it was towed away.

The vehicle wasn’t wrecked, stripped, or burned and had both plates.
