Drunk Street Racer Arrested After Taking Officer on Pursuit

At about 11:16pm Thursday, Turlock Police Officer Rios attempted to make a traffic stop near S. Golden State Boulevard and Golf Road.

Rios had observed the vehicle he was attempting to stop and another pickup truck take off at a high rate of speed from the intersection heading southbound.

Instead of stopping, the vehicle continued to accelerate away at a high rate of speed.

After about a mile and a half, the vehicle finally stopped near S. Golden State Boulevard and Griffith Avenue.

A high-risk stop was conducted where the vehicle’s three occupants were detained at gunpoint.

The driver was identified as Luis Silveira, 24, of Turlock.

While speaking with Silveira, Rios noticed he was displaying objective symptoms of being under the influence. Rios asked Silveira if he’d be willing to blow into a preliminary alcohol screening device, and he agreed.

Based on the totality of the circumstances, Rios determined Silveira was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him.

Silveira was issued a driver’s license suspension order and then booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, fleeing from a peace officer by vehicle, and engaging in a motor vehicle speed contest on a highway.

Silveira’s vehicle was also towed and his two passengers were released from detention.
