On Wednesday, March 22nd, 2023, at 8:04 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported attempted armed robbery that had just occurred at Fast Stop Liquor, 301 W Canal Dr, Turlock, involving two teenagers, a boy and a girl.

An officer checking the area for the suspects came across a couple matching the description near the intersection of Almond Ave and N Golden State Blvd. She detained them at gunpoint for further investigation.

During the investigation, Isaac Covarrubias, 19, of Turlock, was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun and narcotics. The handgun was not registered to Covarrubias and was concealed on his person. Covarrubias was also found to have a $25,500 local misdemeanor bench warrant for driving with a suspended driver’s license due to a DUI conviction.

Back at the scene, the victim told officers that Covarrubias had entered the business with a girl, pointed his gun at him, and left on foot after failing to get anything. The victim told officers that he was not in fear for his life, so the elements of an attempted robbery charge were not met.

Covarrubias was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a controlled substance while armed with a loaded and operable firearm, and possession of a concealed firearm.

It should be noted that Covarrubias was the victim of the stabbing that had occurred at Turlock High School on Friday, November 5th, 2021. Covarrubias and his family are currently suing the attacker’s parents and the Turlock Unified School District for the incident. Several students on social media claimed that Covarrubias was a bully and that the stabbing was retaliatory, however, we’ve been unable to confirm that.
