On Tuesday, October 25th, 2022, at 10:43 pm, a Turlock Police officer traveling westbound in the 1600 block of W Main St, Turlock, was involved in a vehicle collision.

Other officers were only about a hundred feet away on an unrelated traffic stop when the collision occurred. They released the stopped driver and ran to the collision, finding two vehicles involved. The first one was a white Nissan sedan and the second one was a Turlock Police Department black and white Ford SUV.

The white Nissan sedan had a single occupant, its driver. He did not suffer any injuries. The police vehicle also had a single occupant, its driver, Officer Andy Khounlivong. He too did not suffer any injuries.

Both vehicles sustained moderate damage and were deemed inoperable as a result of the collision, requiring it to be towed away.

Officers began investigating and determined that the white Nissan sedan was traveling eastbound on W Main St from northbound State Route 99, while the police vehicle was traveling westbound on W Main St from N Tully Rd. As the two vehicles approached each other in the 1600 block of W Main St, the driver of the white Nissan sedan began making a left turn into a parking lot and failed to allow the police vehicle that had the right of way to pass. During the turn, the two vehicles collided head on. The driver who failed to yield the right of way to the officer had a corrective lenses restriction on his driver’s license, however, he was not wearing them at the time of the collision.

Coincidentally, this is Officer Khounlivong’s first year as a police officer and he was already involved in another on-duty collision back in June, when a drunk driver crashed into his open driver door while he was on a stop investigating a weapon offense.
