It appears California will remain one state, with Turlock remaining in that state, after the proposal to split the state into six separate states failed to make it to the ballot.

Despite the efforts of Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper, the ballot initiative failed to gain enough signatures to qualify for the November 2016 ballot.

The California Secretary of State’s Office reported Friday that only 66 percent of the 1.37 million signatures Draper submitted in the effort were valid. Draper’s workers collected 750,000 signatures and needed 800,000 to reach the ballot.

Most officials indicated that the idea to split California into six states would never come to fruition. Even if California voters approved the plan it would have required the approval of the U.S. Congress, which almost certainly would have rejected the plan.

Draper believed that splitting California into six states would have made it more governable.

In a statement Draper said he plans to challenge the ruling. He claims that his workers collected enough valid signatures and that the ruling is “yet another example of the dysfunction of the current system.”
