Congressional candidate Michael Eggman (D) announced that he has been endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, which supports "pro-family planning" federal candidates for office.
"As a father of two daughters and brother to two sisters, I am proud to receive Planned Parenthood Action Fund's endorsement for my campaign for Congress,” said Eggman. “I'm tired of Washington politicians trying to play doctor, and in Congress, I'll make sure that government bureaucrats aren't making women's health care decisions for them.”
Eggman argues that his opponent in the upcoming November General Election, U.S. Representative Jeff Denham (R-Turlock), has voted to allow insurance companies to charge women more for health care.
According to his past voting record, Denham did vote against a bill, Assembly Bill 119, on Sept. 1, 2009 that would prohibit this practice. AB 119 addresses health care pricing stating that the bill would, commencing Jan. 1, 2011, prohibit health insurers from charging a premium, price, or charge differential because of the sex of specified individuals. The bill passed the senate Sept. 1, 2009 and passed the California State Assembly Sept. 3 of the same year.
Denham also voted no on a bill requiring the inclusion of maternity services in health coverage on Aug. 25, 2010. According to the legislation, Assembly Bill 1825, health care service plans have been required by the Knox-Keene Health Care Service Plan Act of 1975 to provide maternity services as a basic health care benefit. However, at the same time, then-existing law did not require health insurers to provide designated “basic health care services” so that health insurers were not required to provide coverage for maternity services. AB 1825 passed the Senate on Aug. 25, 2010 and passed the California State Assembly on Aug. 26 of the same year.
