With polls having been open for a little more than four hours, local Turlock races are beginning to take shape in an election that has the potential to greatly change Turlock’s local government.

As of 11:15 a.m., 42 Turlock voters have been polled at three polling locations, including Cornerstone Covenant Church, Monte Vista Chapel, and the Turlock Unified School District building, to show the results thus far.

The Turlock Mayoral race, which pits Gary Soiseth and Mike Brem against each other to see who will take over for current Mayor John Lazar, show Soiseth with an early lead.

Of the 42 individuals polled, 25, or 59.5 percent, have been surveyed saying they have voted for Soiseth, while 17, or 40.5 percent. have said they voted for Brem.

The Turlock City Council race, which has five candidates vying for two seats, is showing to be a much tighter race.

Incumbent Bill DeHart has a lead with 22 first or second votes cast for him, based on the exit polls; that puts DeHart at 30.9 percent.

Matthew Jacob and incumbent Forrest White are deadlocked for second place, each having received 19 total votes, or 26.8 percent. Sergio Alvarado and Donald Babadalir round out the rest of Council with 8.5 percent and 7 percent, respectively.

The top-two vote getters will win the two available Council seats.

Measure B, the half-cent sales tax dedicated to fixing Turlock roads is currently sitting below the 66.7 percent needed to pass, with 22 of the 41, or 53.7 percent, of those surveyed voting yes on the tax.

The results of the exit polls thus far paint a similar picture to the results gathered in TurlockCityNews.com’s automated telephone poll conducted on Oct. 17 and 18, done by Dane & Associates.

Stay tuned to TurlockCityNews.com as we periodically release the statistics received in the exit polls and release the results of the election following the closure of the polls at 8 p.m.
