Final Scheduled Campaign Finance Filings Before November Election
With just over a week until the Nov. 4 General Election, the 2014 campaign fundraising cycle is coming to a close; a combined total of $104,381.20 has been reported in contributions to candidates in the Mayoral race, just shy of the record amount from 2006 contributions to then-candidates John Lazar and Kurt Vander Weide totaling nearly $118,000.

Gary Soiseth has reported $3,219 in contributions this period — from Oct. 1 to Oct. 18 — for a yearly total of $55,479. His ending cash balance stands at $7,756 with $11,416 in outstanding debt. He reported $14,397 in expenditures this period, for a total of $54,139 year-to-date.

Soiseth’s individual $100 donors include John Chapman, of New York, and Ronald Cripe, Modesto Junior College Instructor, of Turlock. He received a $1,500 donation from Mark Ahlem of Turlock, self-employed by Hilmar Oaks LLC and $250 from Tom Soiseth, of Turlock, self-employed by Tom Soiseth Tile and Stone.

Turlock Firefighters PAC spent $3,514.89 on mailers for Soiseth’s campaign for a year-to-date total of $4,052.34.

Additionally, Soiseth received $1,000 from Torre Reich Construction, Inc., of Turlock.

Soiseth made a series of payments to ABS Direct, Inc. of Modesto in the amount of $6,666, and $197 to the Stanislaus County Registrar of Voters for campaign literature and mailings; $2,100 was spent on web advertising with TurlockCItyNews.com, and $1,291 went to American Express.

Mike Brem has reported $3,255.31 in contributions received this period for a yearly total of $48,902.20. He spent $19,773.62 this period for a yearly total of $43,806.42. Brem has an ending cash balance of $5,752.86 with no outstanding debts.

Brem’s notable donors include PG&E Corporation, of San Francisco, for a $500 donation, Albert Mendes Dairy for a $1,000 donation, and Geiger’s Fine Jewelry for $99.

Individual donors in the amount of $100 include Arthur Bickford, retired; Arthur Crowell, of Turlock of Farmer Crowell Inc.; Ed. Grossi, Santa Rosa farmer; Tim Bettencourt, Real Estate Broker of Modesto; Richard Luevano, California State University, Stanislaus Professor; and Rober Schmidt, Manager of Fontana Wood Preserving.

Jerry Powell, of PMZ Reality, made an individual $250 contribution to Brem’s campaign.

Additionally, Gary Wahl of Wahl, Willemse & Wilson, CPA’s, LLC made a $384.31 individual contribution to Brem’s campaign for a fundraiser for a cumulative yearly total of $884.31.

Brem reported a $1,000 payment to Ali Cox & Company LLC for web services, and $18,711.23 to Meridian Pacific, Inc, a political consulting and public affairs firm based out of Sacramento.

North Valley Labor Federation filed a 496 Independent Expenditure Report for a total contribution of $4,138 during the filing period for mailers in support of Brem.

Sergio Alvarado, candidate for City Council, filed a 470 campaign contribution form indicating his intention to not receive any campaign funding from outside groups and anticipating receiving less than $1,000 during the calendar year for the campaign.

Donald Babadalir has reported $799 in contributions this period for a total of $5,214.05 this year. This period he has spent $1,028.02, $934.72 of which went to the purchase of signs, for a yearly total of $4,716.67. He has an ending cash balance of $497.38 and $755.00 in outstanding debt.

Babadalir’s individual donors include, John Vazira, Owner of Regency Real Estate, with a $200 contribution, Bellos and Susan Nisan, Principal of the Stanislaus County Office of Education, with a $250 contribution. Custom Decor Cabinetry & Millwork Inc. made a $200 business contribution.

Bill DeHart has reported $0 in contributions this period for a yearly total of $5,450.00 in contributions. This period he has made $100 in payments to TurlockCityNews.com for a deposit on web searches, and had an ending cash balance of $189.24 with $1,000 in outstanding debts.

A separate 497 contribution report was submitted for a contribution from Associated Feed of Turlock in the amount of $1,000.

Matthew Swanson filed a 497 report to DeHart’s campaign for a contribution in the amount of $1,000.

Turlock Firefighters PAC spent $3,514.89 this period on mailers for a year-to-date total contribution to DeHart in the amount of $4,052.34.

With no added contributions reported this period, and no outstanding debt, the Turlock Firefighters PAC has an ending cash balance of $15,664.74 after $7,174.44 in expenditures this period, primarily for mailers in support of Soiseth and DeHart.

The PAC received $6,880 in contributions and spent a total of $9,206.34 year-to-date.

Matthew Jacob has reported $2,532.40 in contributions this period, for a yearly total of $15,082.40. He reported $200 in expenditures this period for a yearly total of $11,527.41. His ending cash balance was $627.59, with $7,500 in outstanding debts.

Jacob’s individual donors who contributed $100 include, Lusania Karam, of Turlock, a self-employed seamstress, Nancy Daley, of Turlock, facilitator of Jessica’s house, and Dr. Maryam Esho, of Turlock.

Turlock Associated Police Officers PAC donated $2,102.40 this period for signs and fliers in support of Jacob.

Jacob spent $100 for campaign literature to the California Voter Guide, and $100 to the Budget Watchdogs Newsletter.

Forrest J. White has reported $1,332.98 in contributions this period for a yearly total of $8,530.98. This period, White reported spending $3,103.11 for a yearly total of $6,419.03. His ending cash balance was reported at $2,143.58 and had $1,000 in outstanding debts.

White received $100 individual donations this period from Chris Kiriakou, retired, of Turlock; Chris Hackler, retired, of Hughson; and Chris Borovansky, of Turlock, Stanislaus County Fair Manager. He also received a $250 donation from Robin Snider, of Turlock, self-employed real estate holdings.

White received $433.98 from the Election Committee for Nick Hacker for Turlock City Council, and $225 from PG&E Corporation of Fresno.

For newspaper advertisements, White spent $1,722.87 with the Modesto Bee and $1,380.24 with the Turlock Journal.

This period, the Turlock Associated Police Officers PAC received $10,000 and spent $6,383.20 for an ending cash balance of $3,616.80, with no outstanding debts. The PAC made expenditures for signs and fliers endorsing Gary Sosieth for Mayor, Bill DeHart and Matthew Jacob for City Council, each in the amount of $2,102.40.

Citizens for Yes on Measure B Committee has reported $1,250 in contributions this period for a total of $27,270 year-to-date. This period, the committee has spent $6,139.93 for a yearly total of $17,485.26. With no debt, the committee has $9,784.74 cash on hand.

The Committee’s notable donors include PG&E Corporation, of San Francisco, in the amount of $750, and Granite Construction Company, of Watsonville, in the amount of $500.

The Committee reported a $409.59 payment to Alexis Nascimento for Facebook advertisements, and a $5,730.34 payment for campaign literature and mailings to ABS Direct Inc. of Modesto.

The Turlock Action for Business PAC, or Turlock Chamber of Commerce PAC, did not file a 460 for this filing period.

This is the final filing period for candidates and committees before the Nov. 4 election. They will, however, still be required to report any contribution made or received of $1,000 or more within 24 hours until the day of the election.

The Nov. 4 election where Turlock voters will choose a new Mayor, two new Councilmembers, and decide the fate of two city-wide measures with long term implications for the City is sure to be interesting considered the near record spending and diversity of candidates.
