The race is heating up for Turlock’s November General Election, as one candidate pulled papers for nomination, and two other candidates officially filed their nomination papers and candidate statements on Tuesday.

Turlock City Clerk Kellie Weaver issued Bill DeHart his nomination papers Tuesday morning, the papers he needs in order to officially file for nomination as a candidate for reelection to City Council. DeHart, who has served on the City Council since 2010, publicly announced his intention for candidacy July 2. DeHart is planning to finish filing his papers at City Hall early next week.

Forrest White also met with Weaver Tuesday, becoming the first candidate to officially file for the November General election. White announced his intentions for reelection to City Council back in May. He, like DeHart, was also first elected to City Council in 2010.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Gary Soiseth became the first candidate to officially file to run for Mayor of Turlock. Soiseth’s nomination papers included the names of 30 registered voters, the maximum that can be used to file. Soiseth explained that instead of asking random voters to sign their names to the sheet, the list consisted of family members and friends who he knew had long showed their support for his candidacy.

“I am grateful to have such a wide group of supporters,” Soiseth said in a press release. “Each of them know me in different leadership roles, but all of them have the same motive: a stronger Turlock. I am looking forward to serving them and the entire community of Turlock as its next leader.”

Soiseth stated he wanted to be one of the first to file in order to “keep the momentum going” in his campaign that has been building over the past few weeks.

Soiseth also filed for a candidate statement.

Mike Brem, the only other named contender for Mayor, was issued his papers July 25, but has not yet turned them in and formally filed at City Hall. He expects to do so sometime early next week.

Sergio Alvarado, who announced his intentions for candidacy to City Council most recently July 22, has been issued his papers but has not yet formally filed. He hopes to meet with Weaver Tuesday or Thursday of next week, but does not plan on filing a candidate statement.

Matthew Jacob and Donald Babadalir have both publicly announced their intentions for candidacy, but neither have yet been issued their nomination papers.

Candidates have until Aug. 8 at 5 p.m. to file to run for Turlock City Council or Mayor. With White, an incumbent, filing today, there will be no extension period for those filing to run to City Council. The filing period for Mayor will be extended five days if current Mayor John Lazar does not file to run for reelection. Lazar announced in March that he would not seek reelection.
