Mike Brem Enters Turlock Mayor Race

After months of rumors, Mike Brem has officially entered the race for Turlock Mayor.

Brem filed a candidate intention statement on Tuesday, per the Turlock City Clerk’s website. He released an official press release on Thursday afternoon announcing his candidacy.

“I am running for Mayor to ensure that the town in which I started a business and raised my children continues to afford its residents the best shot at attaining a happy and prosperous life,” Brem said. “I have spent my life working in the private sector to create jobs and will bring this experience to the table in order to give a voice to the hardworking families and small businesses that make up the lifeblood of our city.”

Brem moved to Turlock in 1992, founding SupHerb Farms. He recently retired as president of the firm, a Turlock-based company that is the largest frozen herb and specialty vegetable processor in North America. SupHerb Farms now employs more than 125 employees.

Brem is a 14-year member of the Turlock Planning Commission, a commission which he chaired until December. He is the chair of the Turlock Mayor’s Economic Development Task Force, the past president of the Rotary Club of Turlock, and a member of the Turlock Chamber of Commerce Government Relations Committee. Brem sought appointment to a vacant Turlock Irrigation District Director seat in 2009.

He has been married to his wife, Tina, for 37 years, with two sons and four grandchildren.

Brem says he will work as mayor to ensure tax revenue is spent efficiently, that the city lives within its means, and that public safety is well-funded. He will use his private industry experience to drive economic development, he says.

Though long rumored as a mayoral candidate, Brem repeatedly told TurlockCityNews.com that his “mind was not made up “ over the past several months.

Brem announced Thursday that he has earned support from “a growing list of local community leaders,” including sitting Turlock Mayor John Lazar.

“Mike is my choice for Turlock Mayor,” Lazar said. “He possesses the experience and leadership to benefit our community in the years ahead.”

Brem also says he has the support of attorneys, pharmacists, realtors, small business owners, and other city councilmembers.

“Mike is the right man for the job,” Turlock City Councilman Steven Nascimento said. “I have no doubt that he will uphold the values of our community and provide the kind of stable leadership we have come to expect in Turlock.”

Brem’s main challenger, Gary Soiseth, a farmer who also works for the Modesto Irrigation District, welcomed Brem to the race.

"Mike and I spoke after I announced my candidacy and we have much that we agree on, but some that we don't,” Soiseth said. “He is a man of integrity and he will keep his campaign focused on the issues.

“This race is about the future of Turlock, and I believe I have a clear and bold vision for our city that sets me apart,” Soiseth continued. “I look forward to a healthy debate with Mike in the coming months."

One other Turlocker, Ed Brault has announced his candidacy for Mayor of Turlock. But Brault, a retired teacher and former columnist for the Turlock Journal, said he was only running to give Soiseth competition, and would likely drop out should another challenger appear.

Lazar previously announced his candidacy, but then dropped out of the race shortly after Soiseth announced his intention to run. Lazar said he wished to spend more time with his family.

If you want a good bremjob his mouth is already dirty with lies. Brem stopped jobs from coming to Turlock when he voted to ban a Super Target and Super Walmart. He also didn't vote to make the old Mervyn's building into a bowling alley. He's old and doesn't think our youth are important. What has Brem voted for? He voted for the land zoning so another Prime Shine car wash could be built instead of a bowling alley. If he is mayor it will be just like old Lazar and only unethical deals for real estate agents will keep happening like Bublak is bought by developers.

Vote for Soiseth for mayor!!!!

I have known mike Brem for the last 7 years. He is honest, caring and full of integrity. He will do what's right for Turlock, as far as the Star Wars reference he is light years ahead with his resume over Soiseth. The bowling alley, lmao, when is the last time anybody went bowling, the other bowling alley was such a money maker right? I don't only support the guy, I'm lucky to call him a friend, and he is an inspiration for young people to look up to. Not only I will be voting for mike Brem, I will also let other people know, what type of good man he is and win as many votes for him as possible.

Brett has some fame but he isnt that powerful to lead Turlockere astray. Keep fighting the fight though, kid.

This guy is just another rich man who wants to give all the city management raises to keep John Lazar's secrets tucked away. How much are they trying to pay the city manager? I heard $300,000 a year. Must be nice.

I was supporting Mike Brem until I heard Ted Howze was talking about how they both were on the planning commission.
Politics makes for strange bedfellows.

Mike Brem is on the planning commission and approved a taco bell be put in the middle of a bunch of houses. If my kids get hit by a car then the blood is on his hands.

The City council already has complaints about Brem and will probably stop this from happening but I'll remember what Brem tried to do on voting day.

Definitely not voting for anyone coming from the planning commission.

Mike Brem is an experienced leader. He has our family of 4's vote. If he is serious about this local election he should distance himself from Lazar, any other incumbents and political parties. This should be about Turlock and our future.

Why is Fransen of any concern? He isn't running for mayor so let's stay focused on the candidates. I would expect that any candidate could advertise on this website so that's why Soiseth is shown. Bren could do the same if he wanted to reach voters.

Dear Guest - David, Liar, Liar pants on
You are seriously mental and need medication. Or you just hate David Fransen. It seems no matter what DJ does..he is wrong. You actually sound like a dumb democrat.

FIRE! David Fransen has a serious problem with telling the truth. The comments posted with no review, legal or otherwise, are blatantly slanted. Count how many Denham posts are listed compared to Eggman. There is something called balance or "equal time", but only someone who is educated would know that! Mike Brem is the only choice for Mayor, although Ed Brault would make a GREAT council member, move over DeHart!
