The California Highway Patrol is reporting that two lanes have opened up on Highway 99 after a collision in Ceres completely closed the roadways and backed up traffic into Turlock Tuesday morning.

Central Valley TV reported that the collision occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. when a big rig may have crossed the from the northbound to southbound lanes, spilling chemicals across the roadway.

HazMat crews responded for a report of a muriatic acid spill, causing northbound Highway 99 to be closed and traffic diverted at Hatch Road. CHP has since declared the area safe.

The closure quickly caused northbound traffic to be backed up into Turlock, with traffic still backed up in the Monte Vista Avenue area as of 1 p.m.

To assist the California Highway Patrol, Turlock police is diverting traffic at the northbound off ramp at Taylor Road.

With the closure, side roads are also backed up along Geer Road and Sante Fe Avenue.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., two lanes were opened on Highway 99, which should get traffic flowing.

CHP reports that Highway 99 will be fully open and flowing around 2:15 p.m.
