Turlock City Council will once again consider closing several streets in Downtown to allow for the first-ever Turlock Criterium bicycle race on Tuesday evening.

Last meeting, Council had the opportunity to approve the closure of portions of W. Main Street, Market Street, S. Broadway, A Street, B Street, C Street, and S. First Street for bicycle race on Aug. 8. However, after nearly an hour long debate between supporters and opponents, Council elected to give the race director Mitch Boehs two weeks to clear up logistics.

Supporters of the bike race, which included several Downtown business owners, argued that the race will bring 300 to 500 racers, with hundreds, if not thousands, of spectators to Turlock.

“I know there are a few businesses that maybe feel this is a risk, but I think it’s a risk worth having for our families, for our kids, and I think it’ll be a terrific event,” said part-owner of 10 East Kitchen and Tap House Titus Striplin at the June 9 meeting.

However, not all Downtown businesses were in support of the event at the June 9 meeting, argue that the event, which would cause road closures from 1 to 10 p.m., could cost several businesses large profits on the Saturday, which tends to be some of the busiest days for business.

“The day that they picked, the times that they picked are traditionally the busiest times for Downtown,” said Attorney Mike Warda, who was representing several Downtown businesses. “Most of the businesses do their best business on Saturday afternoons and a lot of the businesses that are the local places to hang out on Saturday nights, it’s their primetime. I would probably be able to put together numbers that would show that they would anticipate the loss of tens of thousands of dollars."

Turlock City Council also had its own share of concerns and hoped to absolve City of Turlock of any liability if business owners seek compensation for loss profits, as the City of Modesto had gone through after hosting the Grand Prix race last year.

Based on the staff report, it does not appear that Council has added that stipulation to the agreement, but could decide that when they take action Tuesday night. Council can either approve the item as is, or reject or modify the agreement as seen fit.

On Tuesday, Turlock City Council will also consider:
  • Affirming or modifying thousands of dollars for community grants, as recommended by Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission.
  • Adopting the Morgan Ranch Master Plan.
  • A final reading of the Turlock Municipal Code Title 4, Chapter 6, Article 1 regarding residential permit parking zones as introduced June 9.
  • Appointing an ad hoc subcommittee for tree and sidewalk maintenance and repairs program.

Turlock City Council will meet 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Yosemite Room of City Hall, 156 S. Broadway.
