The white tarps covering the Brandon Koch Memorial Skate Park are a signal that project plans are still moving forward. In fact, they are moving so far forward that Director of Development Service Michael Pittcock noted that staff has discussed a ribbon cutting for the park.

Although a mounds of dirt can still be seen, concrete is being laid at the skate park. White tarps now cover recognizable shapes of the stairs and ramps.

The progress on the park is reflecting the unique design that mockup designs have shown. Stairsteps, rails, and the “cookie” outlines can be identified through the tarp.

For those unfamiliar, the cookie design is a unique feature of the park. Wormhoundt Inc., a famous a skate park designer, made the designs in memory of Brandon Koch, a skateboarder enthusiast who lost his battle with adrenocortical cancer in 2012.

Originally, the skate park was located on Starr Avenue, but, following the sale of the land, the park was relocated to Donnelly Park.

The City of Turlock hasn’t had a skate park since the closure of the old one Starr Avenueback in August 2015.

Now, with plans moving forward, the skate park is seeing some work done. According to Director of Development Services Michael Pitcock, the concrete currently covered by the tarps is a special blend that will take approximately 28 days to get a good finished product. Also, workers are getting ready to add some color to the park by implementing the cookie designs by staining the concrete.

With plans for a ribbon cutting discussed, City staff are going to work towards having the ribbon cutting in the middle of June or in the first part of July.
