The Active 20-30 Club of Turlock held its annual shopping spree Wednesday night at Target in Monte Vista Crossings for underprivileged children in Turlock Unified School District schools.

More than 60 students were led through the store with 20-30 members and volunteers who were each allotted $150 each to buy the students clothing such as shirts, pants, winter wear and shoes.

The children are selected from the lowest-income families of each elementary school in TUSD.

For most of the children the clothing and winter wear could likely be all they get for Christmas.

One mother, Esmeralda Andrade, who has a six-year-old boy, Brayan, says she would have never been able to afford all the clothing and the shopping spree is a big relief for her and her family during the holiday season.

“It’s a big load off my shoulders and it makes my feel very special and I’m grateful to know there are people who care about the kids,” Andrade said.

The Active 20-30 Club raised more than $10,000 for the shopping spree.

“This was a great year because nearly every child showed up despite the rain. It was one of the larger group of students we’ve been able to help,” said TUSD 20-30 Liaison and retired Julien Elementary Principal Linda Murphy-Lopes, who has been participating in the annual shopping spree for the past 42 years.
