You have to hand it to the teachers and students of Walnut Elementary, they know how to make great videos and compete for huge sums of money in national contests.

This year Walnut entered a three-minute video featuring nearly all 900 Walnut students, staff and teachers for Macy’s Lip Dub Challenge, which has a grand prize of $25,000 for first place, $15,000 for second and $10,000 for third.

Walnut performed the video with students singing “Be True To Your School”.

The Lip Dub is a music video where the featured school lip-syncs to a song while performing a creative, choreographed routine — all in a single take. No audio is recorded during the take and is added in editing.

Macy’s will judge submissions based on school spirit and participation (50 percent), creativity (30 percent) and execution (20 percent).

“It was extremely complex to organize the video. It took about two weeks to conceptualize the idea and then several days spread out over a few weeks to practice it and then probably eight tries until we got it. The action had to be perfect to do it all in one take,” said Walnut Principal Mark Holmes, who also gave credit to third-grade teacher Irene Hales for organizing and taking video.

Winners will be announced by Macy’s on or about Oct. 30. While the public will have no direct impact on who wins the contest, certainly the number of hits on the YouTube video can help, explained Homes.

Last school year, Walnut won first place in the nation for the Scotties Trees Rock Contest and won a $10,000 grand prize and a celebration. In 2008-2009 Walnut won a national contest with Sara Lee brand bread for $25,000 and a celebrity visit by stars from High School Musical.
