52 local Girl Scouts, including three from Turlock, will earn the Girl Scout Gold Award on Sunday for making an impact in their respective communities.

To earn the Girl Scout Gold Award--the highest award in Girl Scouts--girls must address a community issues with a sustainable solution to the root cause. One girl addressed the issue of poverty and hunger by organizing a student to provide support for more than 1,000 students in need.

Rachel Aldax, Alexandra Knapp, and Jennifer Mello are the three recipients of the Girl Scout Gold Award from Turlock. In total, the 52 recipients have spent more than 4,160 hours making change in their communities using the skills they learned in the Girl Scouts.

“Completing my Girl Scout Gold Award project has taught me a lot about how to be an effective leader,” said Gold Award recipient Skylar Martin from Roseville. “It has also provided me with valuable skills and confidence to take on new leadership roles.”

The Gold Award is a national award that recognizes scouts in grades nine through 12 who demonstrate leadership in their Take Action projects. Locally, only about 3.2 percent of girls eligible earned the Gold Award this year.

“Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is truly an achievement, and these young women exemplify leadership in all its forms," said Dr. Linda E. Farley, Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts Heart of Central California. "They saw a need in their communities and took action. Their dedication, perseverance, and leadership, is making the world a better place."

The 52 award recipients will receive their awards in Sacramento on Sunday. A complete list of recipients can be found here.
