This year’s first place winner was Gabriela Santellano, of Fresno, with her painting entitled “Light”. Second place was awarded to Elora Hargis, also a Fresno resident, with her painting entitled “The Old Oak Tree”. Third place was awarded to Stefani Peck, of Fresno, with her painting entitled “Wish”.
“This art contest is an honor for me because I get to display the art in the capitol, with thousands of visitors every year who go through the capitol and take a look. It’s one of the beautiful things they really stop and take a look at,” stated Congressman Denham. “I appreciate you submitting your art, and the parents for the time you’re putting in, and certainly teachers that continue to drive this.”
Each year, Members of Congress invite high school students from their districts to submit original artwork to be considered for display in Washington, D.C.
The Congressional Art Competition allows students to have their work showcased in their district, as well as the chance to receive national recognition.
The winning student from the 19th District will have his or her work featured in a yearlong national exhibition at the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol where millions visit each year.
Since it’s creation in 1982, more than 65,000 students have participated in the competition nationwide.
