Last night’s inaugural Dancing with the Turlock Stars was a massive success and raised $27,880 from online and in-person votes for the Turlock Salvation Army. In total the entire event raised nearly $34,000 for Salvation Army. "Our committee's goal to bring a lighthearted, feel good event to this community...the community completely responded,” said DWTTS organizer Kristin Bettencourt. “We are so appreciative."
A local chapter of the English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, is hosting several events for Banned Books Week, which is Sept. 21 through 26. Banned Books Week is an awareness movement started by the American Library Association to celebrate the freedom to read all books, whether they’re orthodox or not.
The Stanislaus County Fair has announced that it will make its national television debut on the Cooking Channel’s “Carnival Eats” on Oct. 6. Carnival Eats is a new program on the Cooking Channel which premiered on Aug. 18. The show features host Noah Cappe taking viewers on a food rollercoaster across the country. The show features the unique and delicious food found at carnivals and fairs.
The Turlock Police Association is hosting their 17th Annual Policeman’s Ball on Oct. 3, with all proceeds benefitting the Turlock Police Association, Widow and Orphans Foundation. According to Turlock police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis, the Widows and Orphans Foundation began with a mission to care for families who lost an officer in the line of duty, but that soon expanded.
California State University, Stanislaus Student Union and Associated Students, Inc. are inviting the local community to StanFest, which will be held this weekend at the University campus. The festivities will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday with the first annual Run4U. The “color run” style event will kick off in the area around the Warrior Arena, with a few hundred people expected to participate. Participants can register the day of the event.
