Registration Open for First Annual Downtown Turlock Criterium Bike Race Some rights reserved by Trefethen
Cyclists looking to participate in the first annual Downtown Turlock bike race can now register online.

The TEA Solar Cycling Classic will take place Aug. 8 through the streets of beautiful Downtown Turlock.

The event, which was controversial when Turlock City Council was first considering road closures, but was ultimately approved, is expected to bring anywhere from 300 to 500 racers and hundreds, if not thousands, of spectators.

Registration for the event is now open for cyclists looking to participate in one of the eight races that will happen throughout the day.

The eight races, with start times, are as follows:
  • Kids Race - 1:30 p.m.
  • Men Cat 3/4 - 2 p.m.
  • Men Cat 1/2/3 ages 45/55+ - 3 p.m.
  • Men Cat 3/4 ages 35+ - 4 p.m.
  • Men Cat 1/2/3 ages 35+ - 5 p.m.
  • Women Cat P1/2/3 all ages - 6 p.m.
  • Men Cat P1/2/3 - 7 p.m.

The race is an USA Cycling event and all rules. Riders must present a current USA Cycling license at registration.

Each event, other than the kids race which is free, is $35 for registration. Each race will be approximately 50 minutes in length, with riders making several laps around the course.

The course is a five turn lap with one technical turn — approximately 160 degree corner — in turn one. Race will begin on W. Main Street, take a left onto Market Street, right onto Broadway Avenue, left onto C Street, left onto First Street, and left back onto W. Main Street.

There will be cash prizes ranging from $300 to $800 per race.

If you would like to race a second heat in the day, you can do so with an additional $17 fee.

The deadline to register is Aug. 5 by 11:45 p.m. Day of registration, but an additional $5 late fee will be added to the registration cost.

The race will be free for spectators.
