The Turlock Public Library will host a variety of free and fun events for both children, teens, and adults during the month of May.

Kicking off the month, on May 6 at 10:30 a.m., is the monthly meeting of the Turlock Library Book Club. The book club will be discussing Shanghai Girls by Lisa See. A limited number of copies are available for checkout at the library. Please contact the Turlock Library Reference Desk at 209-664-8100 for more information.

On May 12 at 4 p.m., children can enjoy a special story about unicorns and then make their very own unicorns to take home! The unicorn craft is sponsored by the Friends of the Turlock Library.

Children are not the only ones that can get in on the fun. On May 12 at 7 p.m., guest instructor Dianna Dulaney will lead a free program for teens and adults on the art of arm knitting, where participants will learn to knit using hands and arms, rather than knitting needles.

In recognition of Mental Health Month, presenters from Stanislaus County’s National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will host a program entitled “In Our Own Voice” on May 16 at 1 p.m. This program will address what is like to live with mental illness and how individuals can maintain their mental health. Each presenter will discuss his or her struggle with mental illness and the road to recovery.

Then, at 4 p.m. on May 19, children and teens can take part in a colorful craft. Participants will make colorful tie-dyed butterflies, while learning about butterfly transformations. This craft is sponsored by the Friends of the Turlock Library.

“As Seen on Pinterest,” a new craft program for teens and adults, will be held on May 20 at 7 p.m. Participants will learn how to make greeting cards for special occasions. The program is recommended for ages 14 and older. Registration for this program is required. Please call the Turlock Library at 209-664-8100 to register. “As Seen on Pinterest” is sponsored by the Friends of the Turlock Library.

From 1 to 3 p.m. on May 23, children and teens are invited to the “Superhero” Summer Reading Challenge party. Participants can test their skills in a Superhero Training Camp and make miniature superheroes that they may take home. Refreshments will be served. The Summer Reading Challenge party is sponsored by the Friends of the Turlock Library.

Last, but certainly not least, all ages can build LEGO displays for the Turlock Library on May 26 at 4 p.m. LEGO play helps children learn basic mathematical and engineering skills in a fun, hands-on environment. Children under the age of 4 are welcome to participate, however they must have direct parental supervision. LEGO programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

The Turlock Library is located at 550 Minaret Ave. For more information, please call the Turlock Library at 209-664-8100.
