Talk about a Debbie Downer for kids who want to go trick-or-treating on Halloween!

According to The Weather Channel and Accuweather, the first widespread sustained rainstorm of the fall is headed for Turlock and most of the Valley on Halloween, in particular during the evening hours.

Between the two weather tracking services, there is between a 100 percent to 66 percent chance of thunder showers, beginning at about 3 p.m. and lasting until about 6 p.m.

From 6 to 7 p.m. the rain could let up, with as low as 49 percent chance of rain, but from 7 to 8 p.m. that chance increased to at least 66 percent. The rain is expected to continue off and on until Saturday evening.

Fortunately, at least for the younger children who aren’t in school, there is an opportunity to go trick-or-treating beginning at noon to 5 p.m. with the Kiwanis and Turlock Downtown Property Owner’s Association “Trick-or-Treat Downtown” event.

Children and families will be treated to free popcorn and ice cream at Central Park, next to the Chamber of Commerce building,

Also, for the later hours of the evening, from 6 to 8 p.m. the California State University, Stanislaus Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and Student Life will be hosting a Halloween Gala in the Village Housing and Residential Life Facility.

The Gala, which is free and open to the public, will have a haunted house created by CSU Stanislaus students, a costume contest, carnival games, a book give-away and of course trick or treating.
