The California State University, Stanislaus Police Department is warning of a scholarship/grant scam that is targeting students.

Recently, a CSU Stanislaus student allegedly received a call from an unknown person with a foreign accent who claimed to be with the Federal Government, according to the University Police Department.

The alleged scammer told the student that she had been chosen for a $9,000 federal grant and reportedly knew some personal information about the student, including that she was a student at CSU Stanislaus.

According to the University Police Department, the scammer allegedly attempted to get the student’s bank account numbers. The student was also instructed to go to a local CVS and get a “Green Dot MoneyPak” card worth $310 and sent it as a security deposit.

At this time, the student became wary and contacted the University Police Department. An officer investigated the call and determined it to be a scam.

The University Police Department is warning students of the scam, and says that anyone associated with a government entity issuing scholarships will never ask for checking or savings account numbers. Additionally, they will never ask for you to make a security deposit for a grant or scholarship.

All federal and state grant financial aid is administered through the Financial Aid Office on campus and never through a phone call.

The University Police Department asks students to be aware of these types of scams and to never send money to someone they do not know.

If you have been the victim of one of these scams, or have been contacted by a scammer, please contact the University Police Department at 209-667-3114.
